Monday, January 15 – Martin Luther King Jr. Day
In Yale’s O.C. Marsh Hall, the Peabody’s annual celebration of MLK culminates in a Z Experience Poetry Slam from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Emceed by “influential poet-performers” Croilot and Ngoma, the event starts with “a high-energy group performance and a curated open mic… followed by a dazzling lineup of over a dozen renowned competition poets, including Ray Jane, Lyrical Faith, Tymani Rain, T’challa Williams and last year’s winner, Slangston Hughes.”
Meanwhile, from noon to 4, Yale’s Beinecke Library offers a popup display of collection highlights “related to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to the African American freedom movement.”
Tuesday, January 16
The Brentano String Quartet, the faculty quartet-in-residence at the Yale School of Music, performs works by Bartók, Bach and Beethoven, among others, at 7:30 p.m. in Morse Recital Hall.
Friday, January 19
Experimental jazz drummer Blaque Dynamite and vocalist/pianist Doobie Powell make a prodigious duo at Hamden’s Space Ballroom during an 8 p.m. show opened by Mixed Company.
At 9, Party Out of Bounds presents a dance party tribute to “one of the most iconic alternative bands of the ’80s and ’90s”—The Cure—“and a whole bunch more from that era” at Cafe Nine.
Saturday, January 20
The New Haven Museum invites you to “Research Your New Haven Home” from noon to 4. “We have a treasure trove of records on many historic homes in the New Haven area. Come see if yours is in the collection during this free event. You may discover who lived in your home, who built it, or how it was originally designed.”
At 1, Armada Brewing celebrates “seven incredible years of craftsmanship, community, and fantastic brews” with an anniversary party offering “a limited-edition IPA crafted just for this special occasion”; “mouthwatering bites that pair perfectly with our signature beers”; and the rollout of new brewery merch.
At 9, “Art in the Back… Music in the Front” returns to Three Sheets with rearward art by Tyler Cofrancesco and Stevie Knicks and forward music by Tintype, Ports of Spain and The Forest Room.

During a 6 p.m. show at The Beeracks, a cooperative brewery in East Haven, it’s fair to come for the fun name and stay for the fun indie emo pop of headliner Michael Cera Palin. And it’s more than fair to come for the impressively polished openers: Cinema Stare and Montclair, both from New Haven.
