Last Saturday and Sunday, the 2018 edition of City-Wide Open Studios, a multi-weekend arts festival engaging hundreds of local and regional artists, began with Erector Square Weekend. Art-goers wound their way through the studio complex’s post-industrial labyrinth of irregular rooms, mismatched stairways and occasional dead ends to find resident artists in their own spaces as well as visiting artists in borrowed ones.

This year’s theme, “Wellbeing,” resonated at Erector Square even though most of the festival’s themed commissions won’t be landing until later in the month. That’s because, in at least a sense or two, CWOS is always about well-being. Attending the festival is probably the best way to gauge the vitality of New Haven’s visual art scene, which is once again earning a clean bill of health.

It’s also a reliable pick-me-up. Viewing so much of interest in so short a time isn’t a cure for disease, but it works wonders against malaise.
