Valentine’s dating is fraught. Expectations weigh down couples new and old. Competition is fierce for a coveted table. And the risk of stalely going through the motions is off the charts.
So here are six creative date ideas that pack a vital punch, while also beating V-Day to the punch:
Hot to Trot
Far afield, in the pastoral town of Avon, this year’s Hug a Horse Valentine’s Experience at US Horse Welfare and Rescue promises “quality time with our affectionate horses” in a “romantic setting” splashed with “roses, warming fire pits” and live cello this Saturday.
Forging a Bond
Also on Saturday, WorkWorkshop in Bethany holds a Hand-Forged Copper Bracelet Workshop where sparks may fly and attendees will leave with intertwined parting gifts. “This three-hour intro-to-blacksmithing workshop offers participants the opportunity to learn how to forge, form and heat treat copper to make simple bracelets or charms. We will apply blacksmithing techniques including curls, scrolls and twists as well as a variety of textures to make simple wearable forms.”
The Best Aphrodisiac?
Some say it’s laughter, but shared adversity works too. So whether you’re giggling or groaning, a comedy show Saturday night at Hamden’s Space Ballroom featuring Natalie Cuomo and her husband, Dan LaMorte, should deepen the connection. Expect solo sets by each of the show’s better halves followed by a “fan-favorite combo set.”
Hands On
As a low-key get-to-know-you, a Brew & Glue collage happy hour at Three Sheets next Tuesday could offer an indie movie montage’s worth of little romantic moments. Organizers promise to supply “a curated collection of images and letters as well as boards, scissors, glue, and a hefty dose of guidance and inspiration,” with hints of a Valentine’s Day theme.
Romantic Chemistry
Next Thursday, Sherkaan hosts “an event worthy of a Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh date night”: a Valentine’s Day Cocktail Lab. “Build three cocktails together to sip on; share two courses of chaats plus dessert; learn the proper way to shake and pour drinks; [and] experience an educational portion of the evening [covering] history and technique.” Note: a single ticket covers a whole couple.
Art to Heart
Also next Thursday, a Paint Your Partner night at Armada Brewing promises vulnerability, intimacy, suspense and, for most of us, laughs—“a night full of love, creativity [and] questionable artistic talent… Bring your significant other, your bestie, or the person you swiped right on last week—no painting experience required.”
