Urban Legends

Mythical and fantastical figures lurk all around us in downtown New Haven.

Here are some favorites.

Images 2, 9-11, 13 and 15 feature various creatures at Sterling Memorial Library. Image 3 features pegasi at the Sterling Law Building. Image 4 features a sphinx at the Grove Street Cemetery. Images 5 and 6 feature duocorns at Davenport College. Image 7 features a not-quite-human face on Woodbridge Hall. Image 8 features Aphrodite over the Yale University Art Gallery underpass. Images 9 and 10 feature a trolual and a griffin, respectively, gracing the stained glass windows of library staff offices. Image 12 features what could be a chrysomallos, maybe, at the Yale University Art Gallery. Image 14 features a wee dragon near the entrance to Gryphon’s Pub.
