This mild winter gave us a light but wet smooch on its way out the door yesterday. Downtown, delicate snow melted the moment it arrived, except where it could land softly and stick together.

On the “upper” portion of the New Haven Green, thin sweeps of white huddled around churches and beneath gaps in the canopy. But the snow really was delicate, and after many hours of falling, the Green remained almost entirely green, even counting the orange-brown phalanx of last fall’s leaves mustered against the western fence.
Under these circumstances, finding winterly moments, probably the last of the season, was an exercise not just in observation but also imagination. Here’s what I found.
