A gyral trickster appears in New Haven each summer, vanishing as quickly a week or two later.
But the Long Wharf Carnival, as I’m choosing to call it, is a being worth being tricked by. Active here through July 2, it’s designed to part you from your money, but the pure, often meditative joy of exploring the bright lights and fast rides, fried foods and mirrored maze, slick games and colorful personalities made it feel like I was getting the better end of the bargain.
