This Week in New Haven (August 22 – 28)

T hings are innocent enough until you’re throwing axes, shaking/vibrating, extreme-antiquing and basking in “a soundscape befitting… a high-tech dystopia.”

Monday, August 22
Madison Beach Hotel’s Family Friendly Film Festival finishes up with the animated charmer Ratatouille. “Bring your own blankets/chairs. Food and beverage available for sale in the restaurant,” where the chefs will assuredly be human.

Tuesday, August 23
The Yale Center for British Art’s Portico Projects series continues at 2 p.m. with “a two-hour, drop-in, art-making session” for all ages under the museum’s entry portico.

Wednesday, August 24
East Rock Brewing’s next trivia night starts at 6:30 and rewards deep knowledge of the 1990s.

Thursday, August 25
24 years after their music captivated the cool skater hippie kids at my northeastern Connecticut summer camp, jammy indie rockers Dispatch come to southwestern Connecticut for a 7 p.m. co-headlining show with O.A.R. at Bridgeport’s Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater.

Brain and brawn (really, technique) are challenged at Pine & Iron, where the axe-throwing bar’s next registration-required Trivi-Axe competition begins at 8.

At Cafe Nine, the latest Shake ’n’ Vibrate gets moving at 9 p.m. as “DJ B the T Jr trades sets with some of the Elm City’s hottest cutters.” The night’s all-vinyl cuts range from soul to funk to junk to trash.

Friday, August 26
An “S&SPlayground” event promises “DJs, games, photo booth, giveaways, specials at Bulldog Hotdogs and more” from 4 to 8 p.m. on Broadway Island—where things pick back up at noon on Saturday with The Shops at Yale’s final Music and Murals event of the summer, featuring a back-to-school drive led by United Way of Greater New Haven.

[Ed. Note: This event appears to have been rescheduled to Friday, September 2.] Over in Temple Plaza, the Happy Hour in the Plaza series, featuring food, drinks, lawn/board games and live music, enjoys its last hurrah of 2022 from 4:30 to 7:30.

Saturday, August 27
The Madison Historical Society’s Summer Festival of Arts & Antiques, from 9 a.m. to 4 on the Madison Green, promises an impressively deep and wide experience featuring “vendors of fine antiques and collectibles from across the region, selling ceramics, furniture, glass, jewelry, kitchenware, linens, memorabilia, pottery, toys, vintage accessories, and more”; a “showcase of original works by local artists… including oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, drawings, and sculptures”; “live demonstrations of such traditional crafts as bobbin lace-weaving and -spinning, doll-making, bookbinding, pottery-molding, and pottery decoration”; “a classic car show of antique vehicles”; “family-friendly activities… includ[ing] colonial games, a dunk tank, life-size Jenga and Connect Four games, face painting, henna tattoos, Silly Putty-making, and a birds of prey meet-and-greet”; “live musical performances”; and “a delicious menu of fair foods and sweet treats.”

Starting at 7 p.m., the 1990s enjoy a second second coming this week with Elm City Social’s annual Back to the ’90s party.

Meanwhile, at 9, The State House is heading forward to the 2090s (or whatever) with Neo Haven 20X2, a cyberpunk-themed “dark futuristic dance party” promising “a night of UV glow and sinister cyberpunk soundscapes.”
