This Week in New Haven (August 31 – September 6)

L ast March, as the reality of the pandemic set in and forced New Haven to hunker down, we hit pause on our weekly curated events previews.

Today, almost six months later, we’re hitting play—with caveats. Local events are happening at a much-reduced clip, so unlike our past calendars, listings probably won’t cover every day of the week. And of course, attendees of in-person gatherings should wear masks, keep a healthy distance and take any other advisable measures.

Life goes on, albeit more slowly and carefully, and we look forward to helping you get the most out of it.

Wednesday, September 2
If you’ve visited Artspace’s exhibition Revolution on Trial: May Day and The People’s Art, New Haven’s Black Panthers @ 50, you likely heard Paul Bryant Hudson’s Soundtrack—a 12-minute “collaborative project featuring recordings of speeches… over music,” aiming to capture “the demonstrators’ feelings of community, optimism, and love”—wafting through the gallery. Tonight at 5:30, you can watch Hudson perform it outside the gallery (50 Orange St, New Haven; 203-772-2709), then listen to a conversation with Niyonu Spann.

Friday, September 4
At 8:30 p.m., Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) screens close to home, in Morris Cove’s East Shore Park. The PG-13 film stars Tom Holland as the title character and Jake Gyllenhaal as the newcomer superhero Mysterio, who may not be what he seems. Free.

Saturday, September 5
Unlike most music venues, The Cellar on Treadwell (295 Treadwell St, Hamden) has a patio where it can combine dinner and drinks with an outdoor show. Tonight’s concert, lasting from 5:30 to 9 p.m., features Passing Strange, a duo whose music is “laced in jazz, bedazzled in blues, and brewed in a vat of indie rock,” with special guest Hatfield. “Due to COVID guidelines, seating is limited so reservations are recommended by emailing [email protected].”
