Communal outdoor gatherings overlap barely a block apart. Starting first is “Salsa on the Promenade,” a free event along Orange Street near Crown offering a beginner’s salsa lesson led by Jason Ramos at 6:30 p.m. and a dance party powered by DJ Christie until 9:30.
Meanwhile, at 8 p.m., the next installment of Movies in the Plaza—Pitkin Plaza, along Orange Street between Chapel and Court—presents a free screening of the excellent 8-bit hifi nostalgia bob-omb Scott Pilgrim Vs. At noon, the Yale Center for British Art’s latest at home virtual conversation features the British luxury fashion designer Grace Wales Bonner and Christine Checinska, curator of African and African diaspora fashion at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, which bills itself as the “world’s leading museum of art, design and performance.” Registration required.
The first day of Common Ground High School’s annual Seedling Sale lasts from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. and offers an impressive choice of flowers, herbs and especially fruits and veggies to finish growing at home—from sugar snap peas and watermelons to two varieties of eggplant and five kinds of tomato and well beyond. Today and every Friday for the foreseeable future, Ping Pong in the Plaza—Temple Plaza, south of Chapel Street and west of Temple—offers “ping pong, corn hole, big Jenga and more” from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., weather permitting. Just show up, register and check out the equipment you want, which is cleaned between each use. “Bring your own snacks, beverages and opponents.” Free.

The Shops at Yale’s Window Art Stroll & Contest starts today at 10 a.m., when artists will paint window designs at 30 downtown retail locations on Broadway, along Chapel Street and around the Whitney-Audubon District. Over the next six weeks, the public can then vote for their favorite artwork, earning each voter the chance to win a $50 gift certificate and each artist a chance to win some prizes of their own.

At 5 p.m., mixed-media line artist Robert Bienstock and street photographer Hank Paper discuss their newly opened exhibitions at Kehler Liddell Gallery (873 Whalley Ave, New Haven; 203-389-9555) during the latest SalonThrive virtual broadcast. The free series aims to give viewers “the opportunity to explore the artist’s studio, their work, ideas and influences, in an intimate and unique studio backdrop.” Registration required.
