Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., which runs America’s first LEED Platinum-certified brewery, is one of the subjects of a “sensory and sustainability seminar” tonight from 6 to 9 at the Elm City Beer Collective (130 Court St, New Haven; 203-507-2602). Featuring a family-style dinner paired with four Sierra Nevada beers, the seminar covers the company’s “impressive sustainability program” as well as guidance for detecting “off flavors in beer, such as oxidization, diacetyl, light-struck and heat-struck taste.” $35.

Last week, hometown-ish heroes and punchy, dancey, techno-dreamy pop purveyors Mates of State began an unusual residency, taking over the headline spot in BAR’s free Wednesday concerts for the month of January. Opened by The Sun Parade, whose pleasant, clappy, affected kind of pop is like catnip for indie music fans, this week’s show happens at 9:30 tonight. 254 Crown Street, New Haven.
Thursday, January 12
Starting at 6:30 p.m. at Common Ground High School (358 Springside Ave, New Haven), “What Now #4: A Community Forum on State Issues” aims to get citizens—“whether or not you attended previous events, and whatever your political affiliation”—to set aside all the federal-level distractions of the moment and discuss the issues and policies they think state and local legislators should prioritize. To make it real, organizers have gotten 12 state legislators and counting from the state’s third district—which covers most of New Haven County, including all of New Haven proper—to agree to attend. Held inside the climate-controlled main lobby of the Metropolitan Business Academy (115 Water St, New Haven), CitySeed’s Indoor Winter Market kicks off its 2017 season today from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Featuring “root vegetables, greens, apples, cider, chicken, beef, pork, seafood, eggs, mushrooms, dairy products, cheeses, jams and more,” plus “a variety of ‘Saturday brunch’ menu items including hot drinks, sweet and savory baked goods and prepared offerings from a weekly rotation of food trucks,” it also boasts live shows by local musicians and activities for kids.
For a period that began about a hundred years ago, Lyric Hall (827 Whalley Ave, New Haven; 203-389-8885) screened silent movies and hosted vaudeville shows. Tonight at 8 o’clock, it hosts Madame Thalia’s Vaudeville Revue, “an old-time vaudeville revue full of music, magic and melodrama!” $25.

The Peabody’s annual “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy of Environmental and Social Justice” celebration begins today. From noon to 4, the new David Friend Hall, which is the seat of the museum’s stunning new gem and mineral collection and easily converts into a state-of-the-art presentation and gathering space, holds a summit for teenagers. Meanwhile, in the Hall of Dinosaurs, a “world stage” hosts an open mic poetry show at 12:30, Motown-themed live music at 1:15, a “lyrical dance and jazz” performance at 2:15 and a display of “traditional West African dance and drumming” at 3. 170 Whitney Ave, New Haven.
