Sunday morning’s rain made quick work of southern Connecticut. New Haven got 3.46 inches; Branford got 6.98, the highest measured total in the state. In the hardest-hit pockets, rain fell at an almost absurd 3 to 4 inches an hour.
The rain came down hard and it kept coming down over the same places, apparently fed by unusually moist September air. Around New Haven, drivers got stranded in knee-deep water on Middletown Avenue, while Olive and Water streets went under several feet of water. Tweed’s departures terminal flooded and shut for roughly 18 hours. In Branford, a truck nosed into the flooded Little Pub parking lot. Farther west, drone footage showed parts of Westport looking like a river.
By afternoon, much of the rain was gone. Its powerful handiwork wasn’t.
