This week, Labor Day leads into races, art and science, fairs and live music, all culminating in Sunday’s kickoff to New Haven Cocktail Week.
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7
New Haven Road Race + Chapel Cheer Zone

Thousands of runners take over downtown Monday morning for the annual New Haven Road Race, including a kids run at 8:10 and the 5K, half marathon and signature 20K at 8:30. Those of us whose Labor Day plans involve considerably less labor can post up outside the Yale Art Gallery, where the Chapel Cheer Zone supplies a DJ, coffee, pastries, signs and cowbells from 8:30 to 10:30.
Odyssey ’26 Greek Festival

Monday is your last chance to eat your way through Odyssey ’26, where the menu runs from gyros to souvlaki and a whole lot more. There’s also live music, traditional dancing, a marketplace, church tours and, new this year, a taverna pouring Greek wine and beer.

Gamelan Tuning Demonstration

A gamelan isn’t simply “in tune.” Each installation has its own adjustments, which is part of why it can sound so otherworldly. Visiting master tuner Bapak Wibawa will demonstrate how it all works.
Public Night at Leitner Observatory

Start inside with a planetarium show and a guide to what’s currently overhead. If the clouds stay away, head back outside and look at the real thing through Leitner’s telescopes.

The Declaration of Independence as Art

John Bidwell, curator emeritus at the Morgan Library & Museum, shows us how elaborate prints and broadsides of the Declaration of Independence helped turn the political document into a national icon.
Two British Landscapes

The YCBA opens two big landscape shows at once. John Constable: The Landscape Reimagined revisits one of Britain’s most famous painters, while Sightlines follows British landscape photography from 1840 to now. There are talks at 5, gallery tours after and a reception to reward all who look.

Reverend Horton Heat + Messer Chups

The American Landscape in Painting and Furniture

Drivin N Cryin brings three-plus decades of Southern rock to the Space. Lenny Kaye has spent half a century playing guitar beside Patti Smith and helped invent the garage-rock canon back in 1972.

Faust Scored with Live Metal

F.W. Murnau’s 1926 silent film Faust already has plenty of demons. Apparently, the organizers thought it was missing doom metal. The Silent Light performs a live original re-scoring, drawing on black metal, fantasy soundtracks and other ominous noise for inspiration.
