This Week in New Haven (March 17 - 23)

Still standing after yesterday’s parade? Take some hair of the dog today, or let the coming of spring on Thursday perk you up.

Monday, March 17 - St. Patrick’s Day
From 11:30 a.m. on, Haven Beer Company in Hamden is “celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with a full day of live music, festive drinks, and delicious food specials,” from bagpipers and an Irish pub band to “green beer on tap” and “mouthwatering corned beef.”

From 5 to 7 p.m., Best Video in Hamden invites you to “enjoy a pint and a lively evening of Irish songs and dance tunes” from local quartet Failte.

At 7, a special St. Patrick’s Day “Monday Funday” at Three Sheets probably jokingly promises “pure cinematic mastery” during a screening of Leprechaun (1993), a low-budget horror comedy movie that gained a cult following and spawned an eight-film franchise. Organizers promise “related trivia and prizes,” too, plus a special holiday menu and happy hour pricing from open to close.

Tuesday, March 18
Or go even more cult during a Best Video-curated screening of “psychological horror drama film” Possession (1981) at Lyric Hall. “The plot obliquely follows the relationship between an international spy (Sam Neill) and his wife (Isabelle Adjani), who begins exhibiting increasingly disturbing behavior after asking for a divorce.”

Wednesday, March 19
At 6 p.m. at the New Haven Museum, historian Katherine Hermes, publisher of Connecticut Explored magazine and professor emeritus at CCSU, presents “Working for the Revolution: Connecticut’s Patriot Women,” highlighting the stories of local women who “contributed to the American Revolutionary effort politically, economically, intellectually, and even militarily.”

Thursday, March 20
From 5 to 9 p.m., Foolproof Brewing Company in Bridgeport transforms part of its sprawling facility into an adults-only roller rink.

Clue, a “new play” based on the 1985 movie based on the 1949 board game, comes to the Shubert for a five-show stand starting at 7 p.m. Whatever’s different about it, the setup is familiar: “Murder and blackmail are on the menu when six mysterious guests assemble at Boddy Manor for a night they’ll never forget!”

Friday, March 21
From 6 to 8 p.m., Observe / Converse, a show of works by New Haven Sketchers—“a free and open group that meets weekly to explore the city” and sketch it—gets an opening reception at East Rock Market.

Also at 6, at Anthony’s Ocean View, Ronald McDonald House holds its 14th annual Dancing Under the Stars fundraiser. Mirroring the format of Dancing with the Stars, the event “features a seated surf and turf dinner and a cast of local celebrities who will be paired with professional dancers from the Greater New Haven area.”

At 8:30 and 10, Firehouse 12 hosts Adam O’Farrill’s Elephant, an experimental jazz quartet “drawing influence from 20th-century classical music and minimalism, as well as the beat music of the subsequent drum machine era.”

Saturday, March 22
From 10 a.m. to noon at Northford’s Natureworks Garden Center, founder Nancy DuBrule-Clemente leads a Choosing Native Plants Workshop. “Are you looking to start a beautiful, ecologically friendly native garden? Join Nancy for a deep dive into the subject of native plants. Learn about subjects like eco-regions, keystone plants, cultivars, and the various strategies to select and incorporate native plants into your home landscape.”

At noon, only two days into spring, East Rock Brewing is already toasting summer with a release party for “our summer beers.”

From 3 to 4:30 at Common Ground, a “Preserving Food–Preserving Culture” workshop “experiment[s] with the ancient art of wild fermentation. We will exchange cultural connections while making sauerkraut together. Each participant will get to take home their own batch. No experience necessary!

Sunday, March 23
From 1 to 3 p.m., use “found tin and copper in conjunction with printmaking processes such as embossments and Chine-collé to create paper and metal assemblages and collages” at the Ely Center of Contemporary Art.

Meeting at 1:30 amid the Maltby Lakes, a roughly five-mile hike through the adjoining Yale Nature Preserve offers a chance to “explore one of New Haven’s least-known open spaces while visiting the mysterious ruins of an experimental inflatable foam house… Join the [New Haven] Bioregional Group to explore this fascinating and scenic open space where you can find spectacular geological formations, vernal wetlands, mature upland forest, and plentiful wildlife.”
