It’s useful to know which way the wind is blowing.
To get current on that, look to New Haven’s weather vanes, though you may have to squint. Golden arrows point the way above the Green’s Center and United churches and Yale’s Silliman College, while a black variant catches air above the New Haven Museum’s cupola.
Sometimes they aim at the weathered copper owl perched on Sterling Memorial Library’s arrow, his nest a swirling compass like the guard of D’artagnan’s rapier, or a dachshund the color of a well-traveled penny above a home near Edgerton Park.
Back downtown, attached to an arrow with a head like a heart, are a pair of Victorian gentlemen, one with top hat and umbrella, the other with bowler and cane. They shoot the breeze over Yale’s Timothy Dwight College and, like the others, help us catch the drift.
