Mother’s Day usually gets a lot more attention. But today we’re putting some energy into Father’s Day, by highlighting the efforts of those who already have.
Milford’s Tribus Beer Co., for example, is putting on a Father’s Day Block Party the day before the holiday, on Saturday, June 15. Opening at noon, they’ll have bands, food trucks, a golf simulator, a Putterball setup, a cigar lounge and, of course, beer (and cocktails). Dads who like beer and golf will have another choice the following day: Two Roads Brewing in Stratford, where the tee-up to a Father’s Day Mini Golf Celebration is full of dad jokes and promises mini golf from noon to 4 and live music starting at 1.
Back in New Haven, with 1 and 4 p.m. seatings, Anthony’s Ocean View honors Dad by offering a buffet stuffed with options and plumped up further, if he likes, by a cash bar plus cigar and bourbon station. A buffet is also available at Jazzy’s Cabaret on Sunday, when a 5 p.m. Father’s Day Dinner & Jam Session promises “good food, great company, and fantastic tunes.” Two days earlier, on Friday, a 7:30 p.m. Father’s Day “night party” at NXTHVN offers a buffet of its own plus “drinks, [a] comedy show, pictures, prizes and more.”
A few shops at the Connecticut Post Mall are offering Father’s Day discounts through Sunday: Lids (“buy one get one 50% off storewide”) as well as Kay Jewelers and Zales (“up to 40% off select jewelry”). But if Dad values experiences over things, other deals are worth looking at. East Haven’s Shore Line Trolley Museum is offering fathers free admission all weekend, with behind-the-scenes looks at the museum’s infrastructure on Saturday and riverside vintage trolley rides both days. Down in Bridgeport, “dads climb free” on Sunday at The Adventure Park at The Discovery Museum, while up in Middlefield, dads can save 50% on “sports passes” at Powder Ridge Park (and, with an entree, get a free appetizer at the restaurant) all weekend. Farther up, at Portland’s Brownstone Adventure Sports Park, fathers can claim a free wakeboarding upgrade with the purchase of an “adventure pass,” also all weekend.
Perhaps the best deal of all—at least if Dad is already wanting or planning to go—involves a promotion from Uncasville’s Mohegan Sun. The casino and resort is offering a 20% bonus on gift cards purchased online (scroll down at the link) through the end of Father’s Day. These cards “cannot be used for gaming,” a.k.a. gambling, according to the fine print, but they “can be used for shopping, dining and entertainment” on the premises as well as at the spa, the golf club and even the gas station.
The house always wins, they say, but with an extra 20% in his favor on Father’s Day, perhaps the man of the house can, too.
