This Week in New Haven (November 11 - 17)

Veterans Day gives us pause, before Christmas comes early.

Monday, November 11 - Veterans Day
New Haven’s official memorial ceremony, featuring live orchestral music, a color guard display, a singing of the national anthem and a performance of “Taps” with wreath-layings to follow, starts at 11 a.m. at City Hall.

Yale’s, meanwhile, starts at noon in Beinecke Plaza. “Speakers include President McInnis, Secretary and Vice President for University Life Kimberly Goff-Crews [and] a student veteran. A brass quartet will perform the national and service anthems and echoing ‘Taps’”—involving two buglers standing some distance apart—“will be played.”

Grammy-nominated guitarist/multi-hyphenate Cory Wong, who might’ve graced your screen as a function of his membership in the virtuosic and social media-savvy funk band Vulfpeck, comes to College Street Music Hall for a 7:30 bill also featuring the solo project of five-time Grammy-winning guitarist/multi-hyphenate Mark Lettieri.

Tuesday, November 12
As part of a fundraising drive, the Connecticut chapter of the Northeast Organic Farming Association throws an off-hours party for “farmers and friends” from 6 to 9 p.m. at Firehouse 12. A $50 suggested donation doubles as an annual membership fee and gets you complimentary apps from Firehouse’s excellent plant-based kitchen.

Wednesday, November 13
As part of its 100th anniversary activities, the Garden Club of New Haven plants “Public Green Spaces: An Urban Imperative” at the Hotel Marcel, featuring a 5 p.m. panel discussion/Q&A and a 6:30 wine-and-cheese hour.

Thursday, November 14
At 5:30 p.m., “Tangled Up in Blue, Yale’s premier American folk-singing group, presents a performance at the Yale University Art Gallery that responds to themes and objects in the exhibition The Dance of Life: Figure and Imagination in American Art, 1876-1917.”

At 6, Barcelona Wine Bar hosts Spain UNCORKED, “a wine-fueled celebration of the insanely good bottles coming from the region. With 30 wines from our bottle list to explore, Chef will prepare a unique culinary experience of bountiful seasonal paella and passed tapas.”

At 7, the Treasures from the Yale Film Archive series screens Madame Satã (2002) in Yale’s Humanities Quadrangle. “Based on the true story of… drag queen, folk hero, and small-time gangster” João Francisco dos Santos, who “rose to cabaret stardom in 1930s Brazil, this gritty drama ‘doesn't glorify dos Santos but examines the hot, reckless fever of his life in all its thorny complexity’ (Edward Guthmann).”

Friday, November 15
A six-week Polar Express-themed photos-with-Santa installation pulls into Milford’s Connecticut Post Mall at 11 a.m.

United Church on the Green’s Fall Jazz Vespers—“an evening of beautiful music” for jazz trio—starts at 6 p.m.

At The Woodwinds event venue in Branford, the North Branford Rotary Club presents a Fall Fling auction/1920s mafia-themed murder mystery. “Dress like the cat’s meow for this mafia wedding! Flapper dresses, zoot suits, feather boas and headbands, pinstriped suits and fedoras are all appropriate. Traditional wedding attire is nifty too, but not required.”

A two-weekend run of A Christmas Story: The Musical opens at 7 at East Haven’s Cabaret on Main. “This musical, which received rave reviews on its Broadway run, is based on the movie classic that runs ’round-the-clock on television every Christmas.”

At 9 at Cafe Nine, a Pee-wee’s Playhouse theme party offers “live surf rock from The 9th Wave, a DJ set from Shake ’N’ Vibrate’s very own DJ B to the T Jr., vending by Weirdo Wonderland, and so much more!”

Saturday, November 16
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Edith E. Mackrille School in West Haven holds its Mackrille Merriment Festival, promising “over 30 vendors and artisans selling their handcrafted items,” a photographer taking professional family holiday photos, visits with Santa, raffles, face painting and a book fair.

Also in West Haven, from noon to 6 today and 11 to 4 tomorrow, the Harugari German-American Club hosts a Christkindlmarkt—Christmas market. “Stroll through our twinkling lighted tents while staying warm drinking glühwein or hot cocoa and shop from a variety of vendors,” with “German bier, food, desserts and raffle prizes available for purchase” as well as a Toys for Tots collection drive. A traditional rouladen dinner is set to be served tomorrow at 1 p.m.

At 9 at Three Sheets, the next Art in the Back… Music in the Front convenes visual art from Rose Martin, Momma Chaos, Lipgloss Crisis and Rebecca Kaplan-Stone and live music from “glam punk” band Linnea’s Garden, metal duo Turkey Vulture and 16-bit synth pop solo act Falconeer.
