This Week in New Haven (May 19 - 25)

As local colleges draw down for summer, bar nights, live shows and summer kickoffs keep the social scene in session.

Tuesday, May 20
At 7, a Simpsons-themed trivia night at The Cellar on Treadwell in Hamden mercifully, sort of, focuses ‘only’ on seasons one through 12.

Wednesday, May 21
Speaking of decades-old TV knowledge: The truth is out there during a 6:30 X-Files trivia night at East Rock Brewing.

At 7, Cafe Nine holds what is apparently only its third karaoke night ever. “We’re gonna have Hannah on the sound board making you all sound like the superstars that you are, and we have New Haven's biggest celebrity Princess Bob as our host with the most!”

Thursday, May 22
From 2 to 4, the next installment of Yale University Art Gallery’s Sidewalk Studio series “fosters impromptu art making on a drop-in basis” that “connects to works in the collection.”

Friday, May 23
The Somewhere Film Festival, a BYOB (no glass) “film night on the turf… featuring short films, games, popcorn, raffles, and giveaways,” happens from 6 to 10 at Ascent Climbing. You can also bring your own “blanket, chair, whatever works!” Also, “vendors and food trucks will be there with all the good stuff—snacks, gear, and more.”

At 7:30, it’s back to the Cellar for a sixth anniversary metal show. The lineup features headliner Somnuri, a band who balance their often literal barbaric yawp with refined melody, and openers He Was A God, Non Residents and Murder Monday.

Also at 7:30, an ecstatic dance session at Centered, in East Rock, promises “a beautiful celebration of movement and self-expression, inviting participants to flow freely in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.”

Saturday, May 24
An Introduction to Herbalism & Foraging class organized by the Connecticut Foraging Club starts at 10 a.m. at Lake Wintergreen. “Class will consist of a 45-minute lecture where you will learn how to identify wild plants and mushrooms and their medicinal applications. We will then go on a 45-minute foraging walk where we will practice ID.”

Starting at 11 a.m. today, tomorrow and Monday, the Milford Food Truck Festival convenes “top food trucks and craft vendors from across the state” and offers “entertainment for the kids including bouncy houses, carnival games, train rides, face painting and much much more.”

The Madison Beach Hotel holds a Memorial Day Weekend Summer Kick-Off Lawn Party featuring a steel drum band and “food and beverage… available for purchase from our outdoor beach bar.”

Westville Music Bowl reopens for the summer with a 7 o’clock show by premier Grateful Dead cover band Joe Russo’s Almost Dead.

Sunday, May 25
The day before the day, New Haven’s official Memorial Day ceremonies begin at 1 p.m. at Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park and 3 p.m. at the World War Memorial Flagpole on the Green.
