At 6:30 p.m., New Haven United finishes the regular National Premier Soccer League season against AC Newport at Yale’s Reese Stadium.
Meanwhile, at 8, Team USA, having advanced to the elimination stage, takes on Bosnia and Herzegovina in the World Cup, with communal watching opportunities at bars around the city—including The Trinity, whose patio abuts Town Green District’s outdoor viewing array in Pitkin Plaza.
Also at 8, Stella Blues celebrates 17 years of “bringing you booze, fun and killer tunes” by bringing you more booze, fun and killer tunes.
Thursday, July 2
From 3 to 6 p.m., a special pre-Independence Day popup exhibit at Beinecke Library features “Roger Sherman’s masonic apron from ca. 1776; an original account, from 1779, by Ezra Stiles describing the British invasion of New Haven; a letter from Sarah Hillhouse describing the British invasion of New Haven in 1779; the Articles of Confederation; a letter from then General George Washington to the commander of the French forces on their arrival in 1780; the U.S. Constitution; and much more!”
At 9 and 9:30, respectively, the towns of Stratford and Madison ignite their annual Fourth of July fireworks shows over the Sound. Madison’s are preceded and attended by a cookout with live music at the Madison Beach Hotel.
Friday, July 3
West Haven’s Savin Rock Fireworks Spectacular starts at 7 p.m. with live music and “a fleet of food and dessert trucks,” culminating in the 9:15 fireworks.
Also starting at 7, Best Video hosts a book launch and joint reading featuring writers from within and without Connecticut, including poet Scott Laudati, who’s “crisscrosse[d] the country chasing the myths of a lost America” in service to the launching book, Rainbow Road.
At 8, also in Hamden, Denver-based quartet Sqwerv bring their easy and pleasing brand of “jam fusion” to Space Ballroom.
Saturday, July 4 - Independence Day
At 9 a.m. in Grove Street Cemetery, the Sons of the American Revolution hold a “gathering at the graves” of the major Revolutionary War figures Roger Sherman and David Humphreys.
At 3 and 6 p.m. today and 1 and 5 tomorrow, students of the New Haven Academy of Performing Arts present The SpongeBob Musical, promising “larger-than-life characters, colorful projections, incredible music, and nonstop laughs.”
New Haven’s Fourth of July fireworks show blasts off at 9 p.m. over East Rock Park. Wilbur Cross High School is the presumed official viewing area, though College Woods and Edgerton Park are also perennially popular.
Sunday, July 5
From noon to 4, the New Haven Museum invites us to “Spend A Day in the Revolution” at the Pardee-Morris House, with reenactors showing and telling us what life was like as we picnic, play Colonial games and more.
From 9 p.m. on back at Stella Blues, a Red, White & Rave EDM night promises “heavy drops, big singalongs, and nonstop energy on the dance floor,” with patriotic color choices encouraged.
