This Week in New Haven (June 15 - 21)

A beachy start, a dancy middle and a forward-looking finish drop us off at summer.

Monday, June 15
With beautiful weather predicted, the Milford Concert Band performs a waterside program of “pop, rock, swing, Broadway and patriotic favorites” at Milford’s Gulf Beach at 7 p.m.

Tuesday, June 16
At 6 p.m. along the beach line, not far to the west of West Walk, West Haven celebrates the grand opening of Eco Park with “a ribbon-cutting, music, ice cream, and a planting activity.”

Wednesday, June 17
At 6 p.m. at the Pardee-Morris House, Kevin Johnson, who works by day for the Connecticut State Library History and Genealogy Unit and by night as a historical interpreter, offers an account of the American Revolution via the persona of Jordan Freeman, a real-life “African American servant” for a colonel in the Continental Army who “witnessed key events of the war for independence.”

Thursday, June 18
At 8 p.m. at the Shubert, the International Festival of Arts & Ideas presents globetrotting dance troupe Pilobolus’s Other Worlds, a “visionar[y]” performance enfolded, if you like, with the festival gala. “Let Pilobolus take you on a journey through the multitudes of the human condition, seamlessly fusing sensuality, humor, and extraordinary physical prowess into a performance that will leave you spellbound.”

Also at 8, a more personal exploration of the human condition unfolds at Cafe Nine, where singer/guitarist Sunny War, whose music and perspective combine folk, blues and, at least philosophically, punk, takes a stage that’s probably much smaller than the ones where she’s opened for the likes of Bonnie Raitt and Iron & Wine.

Friday, June 19 - Juneteenth
At 4 p.m., the Arts & Ideas Festival picks up with a Juneteenth Jamboree on the Green, featuring a ceremony “honoring Lucy and Lois Tritton, the last two enslaved persons sold on the New Haven Green,” as well as live music and a “liberating outdoor dance party.” “Come ready to celebrate, connect, and move together in our collective spirit of legacy, strength, and joy,” while saving something for an afternoon-to-evening Juneteenth Village & Marketplace the next day.

From 5 to 10 p.m. today, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. tomorrow and 8 to 4 on Sunday, the 2026 Branford Festival expects “thousands of local residents, families and friends [will] gather to enjoy live music, a variety of food vendors, local talent, kids activities, crafts and more,” including, on Sunday, a “car show featuring 100+ vintage rides.”

On a 9 p.m. bill back at Cafe Nine, headliner Minka promises a display of “100% pure serotonin synth funk—a high-energy blend of dance-driven pop, rock, and funk influences.”

Saturday, June 20
A gardening advice session and plant swap happens from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Books & Company in North Haven.

From 4:30 to 10:30 p.m., a Kickoff to Summer celebration at Milford’s Lisman Landing hosts food trucks, live music and, at 9:15, a big fireworks show over the harbor.

Hours before the summer solstice, from 6:30 to 9:30, the Yale Peabody Museum hosts Golden Hour, an inaugural, cocktail-attire, 21+ summer benefit “inspired by the radiant joy and celebration of the longest day of the year. Wander through the museum after hours to a soundtrack of live music by Goodnight Blue Moon that sets the tone for a night of wonder and connection. Savor a thoughtfully curated menu of seasonal hors d’oeuvres, signature cocktails, and elegant desserts inspired by the beauty and abundance of summer. Along the way, learn from museum experts through interactive experiences that bring the stories of our planet to life.”

Sunday, June 21 - Father’s Day and Summer Solstice
An extra special Sunday is too busy to cover in our regular events preview. So keep an eye out for a Father’s Day special later this week.
