This Week in New Haven (June 1-7)

Small-town and small-city vibes collide.

Tuesday, June 2
Starting tonight at 7, Les Misérables, “still the world’s most popular musical,” gets an unusually long six-day, eight-show run at the Shubert. “Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption—a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit.”

Wednesday, June 3
An 8 p.m. Pizzawave party at Cafe Nine combines synthwave and chiptune acts with pizza supplied by a mysterious “New Haven apizza legend.”

Thursday, June 4
While we’re on the subject, at 6 p.m., the New Haven Museum hosts the premiere screening of The Pizza Party, a documentary about that world record-setting largest-ever pizza party at last year’s Apizza Feast.

Friday, June 5
The Fair on the Green, “Milford’s longest-running arts and crafts fair,” returns—where else?—to the Milford Green. Organizers promise the chance to browse and buy from “over 100 of the finest artists and craftspeople [on] the East Coast,” whose wares include “wooden furniture, pottery, jewelry, quilts, hand-dipped candles, tie-dyed clothing, silk and dried floral arrangements, gourmet food, pet treats, paintings and photography.”

Starting with a 6:30 pre-show, the 7 p.m. opening ceremony for the Connecticut Special Olympics 2026 Summer Games happens at Southern Connecticut State University’s Jess Dow Field. The schedule of the games themselves, spanning cycling, soccer, swimming, tennis and track and field, unfolds on Saturday and Sunday at three locations: SCSU, Hamden Hall and, in Orange, Yale’s West Campus.

Saturday, June 6
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Bethany First Church’s annual Strawberry Festival promises “a day filled with fresh strawberries, delicious food [including the church’s own freshly made strawberry short cake], local vendors, music, and a welcoming community atmosphere for all ages.”

Nearby, the Bethany Craft Festival, lasting from 10 to 4 at the Old Bethany Airport, convenes more than 75 craft and food vendors as well as craft workshops for both kids and adults.

From 11 to 4, Hamden Fest in Town Center Park features live music, food trucks, a business and community expo, a kids’ zone, a craft fair, a 5K race and more.

Also from 11 to 4, the yearly Little Folks Fair organized by Guilford’s Community Nursery School “transforms” the town green with “bounce rides, petting zoo with donkey rides, our famous little train, a circus arena and much more. Great fun and food await!”

From 6 to 8 p.m., 32 Edgewood Gallery hosts a reception for Phantom Lines, a group show in which “four recent graduates from Yale’s School of Art working across sculpture, performance, design, and installation reflect on the afterlives of silk as commodity, object, material, and industry,” as well as “its historical entanglement with China.”

At 7:30 at SCSU’s Lyman Center, the New Haven Symphony presents a “‘rockumentary’-style musical journey through [the] life and legacy” of Bob Marley. Featuring “a live reggae band, four guest vocalists, and full symphony orchestra,” the show “weav[es] together storytelling, visuals, and new orchestral arrangements of Marley’s most beloved music.”

Sunday, June 7
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Downtown Milford Business Association’s 24th Annual Pirates Day has a pitch for you: “Dress like a pirate, rock out with Rockin’ Ron the Friendly Pirate, and (of course!) at noonish watch Captain Kidd and his mutinous crew invade Milford Harbor with a live canon fire entertainment! Then we head to the Milford Green to search for pirate booty on a kids’ treasure hunt through town and enjoy arts and crafts, 25+ vendors, and live music throughout the day!”

From 1 to 5:30, a New Haven Preservation Trust tour offers the chance to “step inside six exceptional private homes” designed by Douglas Orr, “a leading New Haven architect whose work helped define the city’s residential, civic, academic, and commercial landscape for nearly five decades.” Walking from Lincoln Street to Prospect Hill, the tour “conclud[es] with a reception at the New Haven Lawn Club, one of the architect’s masterpieces.”

After a gala on Friday and a neighborhood party on Saturday, the 61st Elm City Freddy Fixer Parade, whose grand marshall this year is native son and Dallas Cowboy Tyler Booker, returns for a lively march down Dixwell Avenue starting at 1:30 from Dixwell and Bassett.

Meanwhile, at 2, a pair of walks organized by the Branford Land Trust invite you to “come enjoy impressive displays of mountain laurel, the Connecticut state flower, at the beautiful Red Hill Woods Preserve.”
