This Week in New Haven (July 7 - 13)

A pro-fun week begins with profundity.

Monday, July 7
At 4 p.m., the Beinecke Library hosts a public reading to mark Independence Day. Texts to be read include the Declaration of Independence; excerpts from Life of William Grimes, The Runaway Slave (1825); the 1848 Declaration of Sentiments, which demanded equal rights for women; and Frederick Douglass’s 1852 speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”

“Hear ye! Come hither to Cafe Nine” at 7, where a Renaissance Night promises “raffles, games, vendors, and general merrymaking.”

Tuesday, July 8
At 8 p.m. at Space Ballroom, PAKT—a supergroup of super musicians: Percy Jones, Alex Skolnick, Kenny Grohowski and Tim Motzer—conjure a modern-day Bitches Brew, this time in the idiom of progressive rock.

Wednesday, July 9
The New Haven Museum’s 2025 Twilight Concert Series continues at the Pardee-Morris House with a 6:30 concert by The Jovial Crew, who perform “songs and tunes of the sea, pub, and shore—historic and contemporary.” (Picnicking starts as early as 5:30.)

Thursday, July 10
Downtown shopping, wine and food crawl Flights of Fancy returns. Starting as early as 4:30 p.m., “enjoy 20 sipping, tasting and shopping stops, souvenir wine glasses and event bags, exclusive shopping discounts and promotions, raffle prizes and more.”

Meanwhile, at 5, the Yale Schwarzman Center hosts its next Summer @ The Well event, a “refreshing social experience” accented this time with a performance by salsa dancers Andrew and Cynthia Kinlock and beer from locally based Rhythm Brewing Company.

Friday, July 11
At Lyric Hall, a two-night stand featuring singer-songwriters Pat McGee and Patrick McAloon, who also play together in the Pat McGee Band, starts at 7 p.m.

Also at 7, it’s an American history trivia night at Armada Brewing. “From the Founding Fathers to pop culture moments that shaped the nation, it’s time to put your patriotism to the test…”

Convening at the Green at 7:30, the next New Haven Bike Party, a “costume-friendly, slow social ride,” heads for the beach. FYI: “This is a night bike ride, which means we’ll be riding in the dark, at certain points. Please bring front and rear lights.”

Saturday, July 12
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., a Helicopter Day at Stratford’s Connecticut Air & Space Center features more than a dozen choppers ranging from vintage to military to modern along with a pair of food trucks serving burgers, tacos and ice cream.

Back at Armada Brewing, the 2025 Shoreline Summer Festival, a rock/pop punk/post-hardcore fest featuring 29 bands (with a Spotify playlist to get to know them) and even more vendors, starts at 11:30 a.m.

At noon (or 11 a.m. for VIP ticket holders) today and tomorrow, ParaConn, a “paranormal convention and true crime conference,” haunts Waterbury’s Crosby High School, summoning “special guests, vendors, psychics, readers, authors, speakers and more!”

From 1 to 4, the 11th Annual West River Water Festival in West River Memorial Park next to the Barnard Nature Center promises “free family fun” via “food, canoe rides, [a] touch tank, watershed education, [a] native plant workshop [and] tours of [the] West River Peace Garden.”

On the heels of a Family Feud-style Feud Night yesterday, Stratford’s Two Roads Brewing holds a seven-act Road Less Traveled Music Fest headlined by folk punk/gypsy rock band Bella’s Bartok, today starting at 2. Other attractions include yard games, a local vendor market and live-printed festival tees.

Sunday, July 13
From 2 to 4, and true to form, maker space MakeHaven holds a trivia contest “where you help shape the game! Every player gets to suggest a category, so expect a wild and wonderful mix of questions—from pop culture to pasta shapes.”

From 8 to 11 in Hamden, Haven Beer Company’s roof bar, called Rooftop 2323, hosts its next Sunset Sounds party, this time featuring the sounds of prolific local performer Timmy Maia.
