This Week in New Haven (July 28 - August 3)

Local, national and international live music, not in that order, set up a week that’s all over the place.

Monday, July 28
From 6 to 8 p.m., the next picnickable Musical Mondays concert on the Branford Green offers jazz and blues from the Faye Green & Michael Coppola Quartet.

Tuesday, July 29
Starting at 6:30 p.m., Grammy-winning brothers Damian “Jr. Gong” and Stephen Marley, reggae royalty whose genre-blending has stepped them out of their legendary father’s shadow, perform at Westville Music Bowl.

Wednesday, July 30
’90s/’00s indie rock darlings Phantom Planet, who gained very mainstream exposure when their love letter to The Golden State, “California,” became the theme song for The O.C., top an 8 p.m. bill at Hamden’s Space Ballroom.

Thursday, July 31
Starting at 5 p.m. today and ending at 5 p.m. Sunday, the Orange Volunteer Firemen’s Carnival celebrates its 100th anniversary with “heart-pounding rides for all ages, delicious food from local vendors, classic carnival games and prizes, our world-famous raffle with incredible prizes [and] “a spectacular fireworks display on Saturday night.”

Friday, August 1
At 7 p.m., Armada Brewing hosts an “endless summer”-themed trivia night. “Test your knowledge on all things beach, vacations, summer blockbusters, and sun-soaked nostalgia…”

Today at 7, tomorrow at 7 and Sunday at 4, Madison Lyric Stage presents its final weekend of Amadeus, “a fictional account of the lives of composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri, imagining a rivalry at the court of Joseph II, Holy Roman Emperor.”

Saturday, August 2
Registration for Milford’s 48th Annual Sand Sculpture Contest, organized by the Milford Arts Council at Walnut Beach, starts at 9:30 a.m., with judging at 1:30 p.m. and awards at 2:30.

At noon on Broadway Island, a dog adoption event starring pups from the New Haven Animal Shelter also features free live jazz, free kettle corn, free Italian ice, free face painting and even free parking (at the 150 York Street Garage), plus “complimentary caricatures” for both pets and people.

Fans of both Shakespeare and Bruckheimer will be interested to hear that, today and tomorrow at 5 p.m. in Milford’s Eisenhower Park, the Hudson Shakespeare Company is set to perform Twelfth Night with “a Pirates of the Caribbean twist.”

Sunday, August 3
Starting at 2 p.m., the finale of the three-Sunday New Haven Open Street Festival on Church Street coincides with a neighboring carnival on the Green. “For one exciting day, the New Haven Green will be transformed into a lively, family-friendly carnival, packed with thrilling rides and classic games!”

Also at 2, “beekeeper and apian advocate Ray Sola will pack up the tools of his trade and buzz over to the Pardee-Morris House for a presentation on beekeeping and the preservation of the pollinators’ fragile ecosystem.”

Also at 2, at 105 Sanford Street in Hamden, a wrestler presents a wrestling bout with an equally self-aggrandizing and self-deprecating theme. “Join us for a night of self-indulgence and ego-boosting as Richard Holliday presents ‘Narcissistic Behavior’—it’s all about me, me, me!”
