This Week in New Haven (July 15 - 21)

It’s sizzling out there, but you can still find chill vibes.

Wednesday, July 17
With the grounds open for picnicking an hour earlier, the Pardee-Morris House’s next Twilight Concert (postponed from last Wednesday) features “the bluegrass harmonies of Audrey Mae” at 6:30 p.m.

Underdog commercial sensation and Best Picture winner Slumdog Millionaire (2008), in which the largely tragic life experiences of a young Indian quiz show contestant fuel a hot streak that might just bring him from rags to riches, screens at 7 in Yale’s Humanities Quadrangle.

Thursday, July 18
“Learn how to properly taste olive oil, distinguish quality oils from defective ones, and start exploring pairing options” during a 6 p.m. interactive seminar at Woodbridge’s Massaro Community Farm.

Or learn all about composting during a workshop at MakeHaven, also starting at 6.

Friday, July 19
From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and tomorrow and 11 to 5 Sunday, the Guilford Art Center’s 2024 Craft Expo convenes “170 independent… artists and makers of unique, high-quality work ranging from pottery and jewelry to textiles and woodwork” on the Guilford Green—and renews its streak as “one of the longest-running craft shows in the US.” Along with the crafts and craftspeople, expect live music, food trucks and kid-oriented activities.

At 7 p.m., Hamden’s Free Summer Concert Series in Town Center Park kicks off with a performance by Tusk, “the world’s number one tribute to Fleetwood Mac.”

At 7:30 at the Canal Dock Boathouse, a bring-your-own-chair outdoor screening of Amistad (1997) features “the Amistad Freedom Schooner, the 129-foot reconstruction replica of the original historical schooner, as a commanding visual backdrop,” with the chance to board and tour the vessel beforehand from 3 to 7. And according to an emailed press release, there’s more Amistad-related action on Saturday, when the New Haven Museum hosts a 10 a.m. musical performance and tours of its Amistad: Retold exhibition through 5 p.m., while a second round of ship visitation hours, opened by a musical performance of their own, run from noon to 5 at Long Wharf Pier.

Saturday, July 20
At Fairhaven Furniture, a summer block party from noon to 6 offers “locally brewed craft beers from Armada Brewing and East Rock Brewing; delicious food from the P&M Pizza truck; a raffle to win a Stressless recliner; live folk and acoustic music by The Imperfectionists; and good friends, good vibes, and good cheer!”

Cooperative brewery The Beeracks in East Haven hosts the Shoreline Summer Festival, an alt rock/emo fest promising “a full day of music across two stages, food, craft beer, vendors, photo ops, and more,” with the music starting at 1.

Starting at 9 at Firehouse 12, “come party like it’s 1984 with DJ Darkglobe! You’ll strictly hear records released in the year nineteen eighty-four! Lots of A-Sides and B-Sides, hits and misses, LPs and EPs, 7” and 12”, you get the idea!”

Also at 9, Three Sheets hosts its next installment of Art in the Back… Music in the Front, this time featuring three visual artists, two bands and a DJ.

Sunday, July 21
With slots apparently still available, a 20-team scavenger hunt in downtown Madison raises funds for the Connecticut Cancer Foundation—and awards the winners $1,000.

From noon to 6, “gemütlichkeit” (meaning coziness, according to the internet) is the promise—along with beer and food for purchase as well as live music and dancing—of this year’s Bierfest at the Harugari German-American Club in West Haven.
