This Week in New Haven (July 11 - 17)

Outdoor experiences and a funnybone lift a week that culminates in a proper summer Saturday.

Tuesday, July 12
Three Sheets is the backing board for the next Brew & Glue: DIY Collage Happy Hour. “As always, we’ve got the scissors, glue, and clip art, you just bring yourself! Giveaways and raffles by Troegs. Win some sweet swag!”

The sounds of the 1950s and ’60s fill the North Haven Town Green starting at 7 p.m.

The latest Improv Tuesday from The Regicides, serving up spontaneous comedy and “all kinds of drinks,” starts at 9 p.m. under the stars at The Stack.

Are you the danger—the one who knocks—when it comes to Breaking Bad knowledge? If so, demonstrate your Heisenberg-level superiority starting at 6:30 sharp, when East Rock Brewing hosts a Breaking Bad-themed trivia night.

At 7, the Twilight Concert Series continues at the Pardee-Morris House with live music from the Mighty Soul Drivers, who “take their inspiration from the giants of Southern Soul—O.V. Wright, Percy Sledge, Otis Redding and more” and “combine that with contemporary tunes written in the classic style.” Feel free to bring blankets, chairs and a picnic.

At 8:30, the next Movies in the Plaza screening in Pitkin Plaza features the likable ‘Frat Pack’ sports comedy Dodgeball.

Thursday, July 14
Smooth jazz made even smoother for being led by Billboard-topping flautist Kim Scott graces the Branford Green beginning at 6:30.

Elsewhere in Branford, 90 minutes later: Awesomer and Awesomer, “a hilarious and heartfelt revue that introduces a variety of women determined to find humor in tough situations,” kicks off three more nights at the Legacy Theatre.

Friday, July 15
Live music, lawn and board games and food and drink from Anchor Spa are the stuff of the latest Happy Hour in the Plaza, happening in Temple Plaza from 4:30 to 7:30.

Saturday, July 16
Starting sometime after final weigh-ins at 9:30 a.m., the Connecticut Grappling Championship (think MMA) happens today at James Hillhouse High’s Floyd Little Athletic Center—and you can spectate for $15 a head.

Details are thin, but Wooster Street mainstay Abaté’s is hosting a 30-year anniversary celebration from noon to 4. “Come down and join the party!”

“Reggae, partying rhythms soca sounds” of Moto Caribbean Grooves sound like the soundtrack to a perfect summer afternoon from the East Haven Beach Concert Series. The timing is 1 to 4, and while the location is unstated, it seems fair to assume it’s the East Haven Town Beach.

From 3 to 7, an Old Skool Day Party is the mandate at Club Vandome. “Legendary Kool DJ Red Alert will spin with DJ Diamond Dee and DJ Jimmy Jam and maybe even a celebrity artist performing classic hip hop.”

Thimble Island Brewing’s “newly renovated taproom and restaurant” hosts a stop on the Comedy Craft Beer Tour starting at 8. The headliner is Ray Harrington, who has a set on Conan under his belt.
