This Week in New Haven (January 5 - 11)

Maker meetups, trivia nights, birthday shows, tribute acts and opening receptions warm up winter.

Tuesday, January 6
At 3 p.m., a family-oriented Three Kings Day celebration offers “stories, crafts and community fun!”

From 6 to 7 in the Tinker Lab at Ives Main Library, this month’s Fiber Arts Fundamentals workshop can teach you “how to make a fleece scarf that fluffs up into a fuzzy boa. It looks fancy but is surprisingly simple to make!”

Wednesday, January 7
At 6:30 p.m., East Rock Brewing Company hosts a trivia night with the toughest category of all: “general.” (So does New England Brewing Co. in Branford, at the former location of Stony Creek Brewery.)

From 7 to 11 in Hamden, The Cellar on Treadwell holds its next karaoke night.

Thursday, January 8
At New England Brewing in Woodbridge, a Sips & Sparks speed dating event offers a “chance to mix things up, meet new people and have fun putting yourself out there,” if you’re between (or near) the ages of 35 to 49.

Friday, January 9
From 2:30 to 4 p.m. at Yale’s Haas Arts Library, a reception reportedly open to the public marks the opening of A Century on Stage: The David Geffen School of Drama, an exhibit drawing on the school’s “archives, props, costumes, scenic models and more.”

Starting at 5:30, Cro-Mags and Dead by Wednesday drummer Opus, a.k.a. Christian Lawrence, throws his 2026 Blizzard B-Day Bash at Toad’s Place. The hard rock fest features eight acts on the main stage and two more in Lilly’s Pad.

Starting at either 6:30 or 7, Amarante’s Sea Cliff holds a Winter Line Dance hosted by DJ John “Cadillac” Saville and Kickin’ It Line Dance.

At 7, Armada Brewing loads a video game-themed trivia night. “From retro classics to modern favorites, test your skills across consoles, characters, soundtracks, and gaming history.”

Saturday, January 10
Starring Canadian La Voix (The Voice) finalist Yvan Pedneault, Queen: A Royal Tribute comes to the Shubert for a 7 p.m. show “re-creating the music the way Freddie sang it, and just as you remember it.”

Also at 7, North Haven winery Small Batch Cellars hosts The Tom Prettys and The Breakers, a tight but not uptight Tom Petty tribute act.

At 7:30, locally rooted and married guitar and vocal duo Goodnight Moonshine, whose folk music promises “a depth of improvisation and tonal subtlety usually reserved for jazz,” headline Hamden’s Space Ballroom.

Starting at 8, a dance party at Stella Blues promises an “epic,” “insane” time with three of eight DJs celebrating birthdays and another three performing “b2b” (together on stage).

A goth night featuring “musick to play in the dark” starts at 10 at Partners Cafe. “Congregate in séance with kindred spirits and sybaritic antics. With the Winter Winds we dance o’er deep roots of dormant saplings frozen in the mire, purling to a cacophony of Gothick and ethereal requiems.”

Sunday, January 11
At 2 p.m., Kehler Liddell Gallery holds an opening reception for Current, a juried exhibition featuring work by some 50 guest artists.

Also at 2, promising “free snacks and great vibes,” MakeHaven holds its next “Meet Someone New, Meet Someone Who” event, a “social gathering for makers. Whether you’re working on something wild and wonderful, or still brainstorming your next big idea, this is the perfect space to show it off or bounce ideas around.”
