The second-to-last Salsa Under the Stars meetup of the summer begins at 7:30 p.m. with a free salsa lesson tonight on Broadway Island.

At 5:30 p.m., MakeHaven hosts a Family Junk Jamboree inviting young families to “see what magic we can make” from the maker space’s scrap materials.
A six o’clock screening of Brokeback Mountain (2005) brings this acclaimed, understated cowboy love story to the big screen at Lyric Hall.
Wednesday, August 20
At 8 p.m., with a reported capacity of 1,000, Toad’s Place welcomes the Silversun Pickups for one of the most intimate dates of the alt rock band’s current tour, 24 hours after the band’s drummer, Christopher Guanlao, appears on a much more intimate bill at Cafe Nine with his solo project, Crooner. Joining him there are New Haveners Aries Crux and Sam Carlson (The Tines, Ports of Spain) as well as eponymous indie rock/post-hardcore act Che Arthur, who tells us other members of Silversun Pickups will be DJing between and after the bands.

Another 24 hours sees Up on the Down Beat, a jazzy “New Haven-based supergroup on a mission to revitalize funk in CT and beyond,” up on the stage at Stella Blues.
Friday, August 22
Over in Branford, Longley’s hosts a Cruise Night showing off classic and maybe not-so-classic cars from 4 to 8 p.m. “Bring your ride—all makes, models, and years are welcome—and enjoy a laid-back evening filled with music, food specials, and good vibes.”
Saturday, August 23
From 3 to 10 p.m. just off the town green, Guilford’s St. George Church hosts an Italian Festival featuring food, drinks, live music, games, raffle prizes and a meatball competition.
At 6:30, Westville Music Bowl hosts the seminal ’90s reggae punk band Sublime, now fronted by the original lead singer’s son, Jakob Nowell, who actually does sound a lot like his iconic dad.
Sunday, August 24
From noon to 4, a Family Day at the historic Pardee-Morris House features “spirited fife-and-drum music by the Second Company Governor’s Foot Guard (chartered in New Haven in 1775!), a colonial-era retail shop, herb-garden tours and colonial games.”
