This Week in New Haven (August 12 - 18)

A finale comes first, followed by a series of debuts.

Tuesday, August 13
At 5:30 p.m. on the West Haven Green, the season finale of a “¡Fiestas!” concert series offers “party music… by Hispanic/Latine composers from all over the world” performed by Ritmo y Son String Quartet.

Starting at 6, St. Mary’s Church hosts a local—and yet, if you don’t have a Catholic faith background, exotic—experience: a “feast day adoration, mass, and veneration” honoring local historical figure Michael McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus. “All are invited.”

Wednesday, August 14
From 6 to 8 p.m., East Haven’s Shore Line Trolley Museum hosts a Summer Supper to benefit Haven’s Harvest, a New Haven-based nonprofit “with a mission to build community and reduce food waste.” The supper in question is “a mouthwatering meal” made by a local chef using “rescued ingredients donated to Haven’s Harvest.”

Also at 6, Hamden Library’s Brundage branch hosts a presentation on identifying, foraging, preparing and eating invasive plants.

Also at 6, Best Video in Hamden hosts an intimate show headlined by Posies co-founder/singer/songwriter and critically acclaimed solo artist Jon Auer, who was also a member of Big Star for nearly two decades. Opening the show are local power pop purveyors The Shellye Valauskas Experience.

The Princess Bride (1987), a favorite answer to “What’s your favorite movie?”, screens tonight at 8 in Pitkin Plaza.

Thursday, August 15
From 4 to 7 p.m., one of Madison’s commercial strips is partially closing to car traffic and fully opening to the town’s 15th annual Beachcomber Night. Expect food trucks, live music and “amazing in-store events and sales while enjoying beer, wine, and spirits tastings.”

Friday, August 16
Terrificon, a comics-first comic convention that nonetheless boasts an impressive roster of Hollywood talent from comics-derived movies and shows, kicks off three days of panels, signings, vendors and more at 1:30 p.m. inside Mohegan Sun.

A Balloon Glow and Laser Show festival on the Guilford Fairgrounds offers tethered hot air balloon rides, food and other vendors, music live and DJed and night-ending laser shows from 5 to 10 tonight and tomorrow.

Space Ballroom in Hamden hosts an 8 o’clock bill headlined by the virtuosic and “unapologetically original” rock band Bent Knee. Openers include “lush, dreamy” Nova One and award-winning homegrown prog rock of Mile Marker Zero.

Saturday, August 17
The Milford Oyster Festival returns for its milestone 50th year. Lasting from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in downtown Milford (unless you count a kickoff event last night), a long attraction list spans a spread of food trucks, drinking gardens and 30,000 oysters; three stages of live music including a main stage featuring nationally touring acts and a kids’ stage; “harbor activities” including canoe and kayak races; marketplaces featuring local businesses and civic organizations as well as “over 200 artists and artisans”; and a classic car, truck and motorcycle show.

Farther down the coast, there’s a new player in town, Foolproof Brewing Company—and that town is Bridgeport, where an Augtoberfest party marks the grand opening of a massive facility. Between noon and 9, expect live and DJed music; German-themed specials and contests; and, of course, beer.

At 9 in Woolsey Hall, seven-time Grammy-winning saxophonist Paul Winter and his Consort perform “Adventures in the Universe,” a 150th birthday tribute to famed New Haven-rooted composer Charles Ives. “Winter takes inspiration from Ives’s aural vision of a ‘Universe Symphony,’ an epic work he had never realized in his lifetime, but which he encouraged future musicians to explore,” according to a press release.

Sunday, August 18
A Nature Stewards Field Day at Guilford’s Henry Whitfield State Museum starts at noon. “Meet turtles, owls, bees, butterflies, and more!”

A late-summer surge of shows at Westville Music Bowl includes a 7 p.m. appearance by “folk punk progenitors” Violent Femmes, set to perform their career-making debut album from 1983.
