All through Milfordโ€™s Silver Sands are silvery strands: a long, gray bridge over marsh; shimmering tall grasses; the crests of small waves hitting beach and sandbar; the sandbar itself, coming and going opposite the tide; the fine, silky plumes of one little egret; a snaking, light gray boardwalk; a leafless, limb-lopped, white-birch bird perch; and, sometimes, wispy threads of vapor embroidering rich evening skies.

There might even be some actual silver. Legend has it that the parkโ€™s satellite, Charles Islandโ€”to which you can walk when the tide is low, though itโ€™s (a) a protected bird sanctuary, with access prohibited from May 1 to September 9, and (b) reportedly filled with poison ivyโ€”is where the accused pirate William Kidd of Scotland, a.k.a. Captain Kidd, stashed some treasure circa 1699.

Though many have searched, it seems none have yet found Kiddโ€™s buried booty. You can only hope its seekers didnโ€™t miss the other treasures Silver Sandsโ€”and its neighbor, Walnut Beachโ€”more freely give.
