To the east and a little north, a pair of dueling backyard fireworks displays both preceded and outlasted Sunday’s official show above Wilbur Cross High School, exhibiting such longevity and determination that one bystander compared it to the clash between the Hatfields and McCoys.

Still, they couldn’t fight City Hall. The city’s fireworks flew higher, bigger and much more shrewdly. Sublime painterly moments materialized and dispersed again and again, before a finale like bombs bursting in air gave the people what they wanted.
