Wednesday, June 23
Two hours before its first Twilight Concert of the season (starring rock/funk/blues band Otis and the Hurricanes), the Pardee-Morris House (325 Lighthouse Rd, New Haven) hosts a 5 p.m. meet-and-greet and book signing with Connecticut multi-sport legend Joan Joyce (pictured above), who, over the course of a decades-long softball career that started at age 14, dominated both as a hitter and a pitcher, winning numerous national and world championships and setting many still-standing records. She was simultaneously a basketball star, earning several All-American honors and playing for a time with the US women’s national team. In her 30s, she took up golf and soon qualified for the LPGA tour, where she set the world record for fewest putts in a single 18-hole round. And that’s not even close to the end of her story.

At 8:30 p.m. in Pitkin Plaza, the next Movies in the Plaza event features an animated comedy that turned the medium on its head and appeals equally well to adults, teens and young kids: Shrek (2001). Free.

Thursday, June 24
The first Folk at the Edge concert, a new series from CT Folk in Edgewood Park, starts at 6 p.m. and features two quartets: wondrous, inventive Twisted Pine and more commercially grounded Parsonsfield. $20, with premium “VIP Party Pods” available.

At 7 p.m. over Zoom (registration required), “Black, Arab, African, American: An Evening with Alsarah & The Nubatones” promises “the sounds of East Africa and the spirit of Brooklyn” via “an exclusive performance followed by a LIVE conversation with Alsarah.” Free.

Friday, June 25
All the sanctioned seating has been snapped up for every mainstage performance on the Green during the final weekend of the 2021 International Festival of Arts & Ideas. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the show, either by asking for walk-up admission or settling into a spot outside the official crowd area’s mesh perimeter. Free.

Saturday, June 26
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at MakeHaven (770 Chapel St, New Haven), participants in a guided session will use a “planer, table saw, chop saw, and sander,” as well as mineral oil, and “leave class with knowledge, hands-on experience, and your own handmade cutting board!” $70, or $55 for MakeHaven members.
