This Week in New Haven (January 6 – 12)

E njoy dispatches from an architecture practice in Chile, “mystical wintry elegance” at a Castle, pasta demos for different demos and, amazingly, much more this week in New Haven.

Monday, January 6
Hudson Leroy (5 Edwards St, New Haven), a craft cocktail room and event space connected to wine bar August, is hosting a “cocktail soiree” to benefit firefighters battling the profoundly catastrophic fires ravaging Australia. 6 to 9 p.m.

Tuesday, January 7
For ’member?, a tribute band celebrating a different act every show, with a lineup that rotates about as often, tonight’s memories are devoted to the late, great Sublime. The free show starts sometime after 8:30 p.m. at Pacific Standard Tavern (212 Crown St, New Haven), with drink specials until 10.

Flights of Fancy - January 23

Wednesday, January 8
As it periodically does, the Yale University Art Gallery (1111 Chapel St, New Haven) is cultivating mindfulness at 2 p.m. Led by Anne Dutton, a stress reduction specialist at the Yale Stress Center, and Danielle Casioppo, a health educator with Being Well at Yale, “each session includes a mindfulness practice and discussion of a carefully selected artwork from the Gallery’s collection.” Hopefully this appeal for punctuality doesn’t induce stress: “Latecomers will not be accommodated.” Free.

At 4 p.m., Ives Main Library (133 Elm St, New Haven; 203-946-8130) is hosting a “pasta party” geared towards kids ages 5 and up, complete with a pasta demonstration from local restaurateur Jason Sobocinski. Free.

Thursday, January 9
Cazú Zegers, a visiting professor at the Yale School of Architecture, “presents the work of her Santiago, Chile-based architecture firm” at 6:30 p.m. in Paul Rudolph Hall’s Hastings Hall (180 York St, New Haven). If her own website is any indication, attendees can expect a lot of dramatic lines, striking material blends and landscapes to match. Free.

A Comedy Craft Beer Night at Counter Weight Brewing (23 Raccio Park Rd, Hamden; 203-821-7333) features three touring comedians—Ryan Brauth, Mark DeMayo and Neil Rubenstein—and includes a free beer with each $20 ticket. 7:30 p.m.

Creative Arts Workshop - Winter Classes Now Open

Friday, January 10
Starting at 2 p.m., the free Friday Movie Matinee at Ives Main Library (133 Elm St, New Haven; 203-946-8130) is screening the instant classic Inception (2010). Directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the film follows a fugitive whose only hope of putting his life back together is to invade the dreams of a powerful target and convince his subconscious to do the unthinkable.

From 6 to 10 p.m., Bill Miller’s Castle (834 E Main St, Branford; 203-488-4583) is the site of a Witches Wolf Moon Ball promising “mystical wintry elegance,” “fireside mythic storytelling” and “magic, dining and dancing.” Organizers encourage eccentric costumes commensurate with the theme. Individual tickets cost about $129, with pairs going for $214 (processing fees included).

Saturday, January 11
Artist Shilo Ratner’s first local solo show gets an artist’s reception at DaSilva Gallery (897-899 Whalley Ave, New Haven) from 5 to 7 p.m. The paintings, described as newer work and reminiscent of abstraction pioneer Ilya Bolotowsky, balance open blocks of color with tighter clusters of geometric forms. Free to attend.

At 8 p.m., the Shubert Theatre (247 College St, New Haven; 203-562-5666) plays host to Beatlemania 50: The Magical Symphony Tour. “Backed by an 11-piece ensemble that mimics the exact instrumentation of the later albums, this tour will expertly re-create, note-for-note, the later albums that were masterfully produced in the studio but rarely performed.” But fear not, early Beatles fans: “Though there is an emphasis on songs like ‘Yesterday,’ ‘Elenor Rigby’ and ‘The long and Winding Road,’ you will hear hits from the early days as well.” $39-59.

Sunday, January 12
In parallel with its Christmas exhibition, which focuses on Europe this year, the Knights of Columbus Museum (1 State St, New Haven; 203-865-0400) hosts back-to-back events celebrating southern European traditions—specifically Italian ones. From 1 to 2 p.m. there’s an anginetti (sometimes called lemon drop cookies) competition judged by a panel of five media figures including Daily Nutmeg’s own publisher, Mike Mims. Then, from 2 to 3 p.m., there’s an Italian pasta making demonstration by Angelo Durante of West Haven-based Durante’s Pasta Company, “a family operation established three decades ago” that “has a reputation for quality and authentic tradition in manufacturing handmade pasta.” Free.
