It’s Tax Day, so if you haven’t finished your 2018 taxes, now’s the time.
With those out of the way, a different sort of puzzle awaits. Elm City Games, located on the second floor of Agora (760 Chapel St, New Haven), invites members (membership costs $20/month) or guests (a day pass costs $10) to its weekly Puzzle Club gathering, where, from 6 to 10 p.m., you can “sit around with awesome people” and put a jigsaw puzzle together. At 7:30 p.m. in Morse Recital Hall (470 College St, New Haven; 203-432-4158), chamber orchestra collective A Far Cry presents “Gravity,” described as “a progression of works for strings” that begins in the “spiritual heavens,” then “comes down to earth,” then “zoom[s]” back out. $28-38, with discounts for students.

From 4 to 5 p.m., Mitchell Library (37 Harrison St, New Haven; 203-946-8117) hosts a family-oriented celebration of the Indian holiday Holi (which officially fell in March), featuring “stories, crafts, Indian Bhangra dance performed by Yale students and a ‘play of colors.’” That last bit makes sense of the library’s parting advice: “Come dressed for a mess!”

At 6 p.m. in the Curran Community Room at Gateway Community College (20 Church St, New Haven), the International Festival of Arts & Ideas holds its 2019 Festival Launch Party—“the grand unveiling” of this year’s programming‚ including “premiere performances, Ideas events, walking and bike tours, food experiences and neighborhood festivals.” “Drinks and light bites will be provided” at this free event, but be sure to RSVP by Tuesday, April 16.

Friday, April 19 – Passover Begins
Steve Rodgers, who cofounded and fronted the legendary local indie rock band Mighty Purple and owned and operated The Space, The Outer Space and The Ballroom at The Outer Space, is returning to a new stage with a new record and lots of old friends. It’s an album release party for Rodgers’s Count It All Joy, featuring guest appearances by a bevy of top local talent including “Cindertalk, David Keith, Jonny Rodgers, Adrian VanDeGraff, Seth Adam, Ian Biggs, [and] Ben Dean” plus “a closing set of old-school Mighty Purple songs.” Held at The State House (310 State St, New Haven), tickets are going for $15 in advance or $20 day of, with doors opening at 7 p.m.
Saturday, April 20
At College Street Music Hall (238 College St, New Haven; 203-867-2000), hard-hitting metalcore band Hatebreed, which formed in Bridgeport in 1993, is celebrating 25-plus years with a packed bill starting at 6:30 p.m. Opening the show is “extreme metal” act Fit For An Autopsy, followed by thrashing hardcore punk band Cro-Mags, hardcore act Terror, death metal band Obituary and, of course, the headliner Hatebreed. $22-29.
For a very different vibe, head to Christy’s Irish Pub (261 Orange St, New Haven), where 4/20 is a tokin’, not token, holiday. It’s celebrated here via the fourth annual Groovezilla party, which features live music by Zillawatt along with “heady specials and munchies” starting at 8 p.m.
Sunday, April 21 – Easter
In the middle of all the Easter brunches and religious services happening around town, student group Refugee and Immigrant Student Education (RISE), which connects local immigrant and refugee families with Yale tutors, is putting on its yearly RISE Multicultural Festival on Yale’s Old Campus (the quadrangle bounded by Chapel, High, Elm and College Streets). The event features “henna, spoken word poetry, bhangra dancers, art vendors and an abundance of free delicious food,” as well as performances by local high schoolers.
