Monday, June 28
Starting at 6:30 p.m. with a beginners’ lesson, the next Salsa in Ninth Square returns to the pedestrians-only section of Orange Street just north of Crown. “No partner or previous dance experience required!” Free; donations accepted.

Gordon H. Chang, author of Ghosts of Gold Mountain (2019)—“a groundbreaking history of the Chinese workers who built the Transcontinental Railroad, helping forge modern America only to disappear into the shadows of history”—leads a virtual author talk organized by Orange’s Case Memorial Library at 7 p.m. Free; register here.

Friday, July 2
At the Canal Dock Boathouse (475 Long Wharf Dr, New Haven), two waterside “July 4th on the Wharf” concerts—happening today at 5:30 p.m. and Sunday at 3—pair a sextet of musicians from the New Haven Symphony Orchestra with guest soprano vocalist Lisa Williamson. Regular tickets cost $25, with discounts for students and youth.

Saturday, July 3
At noon, Friends of Fort Wooster Park invite the city to come to “the site of a Revolutionary War battle”—the park itself (959 Townsend Ave, New Haven)—“and celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of New Haven. Patriotic music, refreshments, history and tours.”

At 5:30, local singer/pianist Isabella Mendes and NYC-based bassist Flavio Lira bring bossa nova and other styles from their native Brazil to the outdoor stage at Best Video (1842 Whitney Ave, Hamden; 203-287-9286). “No cover charge but please bring cash for the musicians’ tip jar.”

Sunday, July 4 – Independence Day
From 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., Walnut Beach, located near East Broadway and Viscount Drive in Milford, is celebrating America with the sounds of the Caribbean: steel drum music courtesy of Silver Steel.

Fourth of July fireworks are once again popping over East Rock, with the fields at Wilbur Cross High School (181 Mitchell Dr, New Haven) serving as the official viewing area. The festivities, including DJed music and food trucks, begin at 7 p.m., with the fireworks proceeding a little after 9.
