This Week in New Haven (September 14 – 20)

F ood is a focal point in New Haven—a point this week repeatedly makes.

Monday, September 14
With a double-length, pandemic-adapted format, the latest New Haven Restaurant Week returned yesterday as “New Haven Restaurant Week(s) Remixed.” Through September 26, some 25 city restaurants—including Harvest, South Bay, House of Naan, Olea—are offering $19 two-course lunches, $36 three-course dinners and/or $60 family takeout packages, most if not all prix fixe. Reservations are required for table dining, while takeout orders “should be placed at least 24 hours in advance.”

The New Haven Pride Center’s annual PRIDE celebration also began on Sunday with a remixed format. The busy all-virtual itinerary picks up tonight at 7:30 as Pride Center staff visit with local restaurateur Sonia Salazar, who owns Barracuda (which made the food pictured above) and Te Amo Tequila and happens to be a lesbian. “Join us as we step foot into Sonia’s home kitchen and explore some of her favorite home-cooked meals, discuss running an LGBTQ+-owned restaurant, and more!” Other events include the 4th Annual Mx. Pride New Haven Pageant, when, on Friday at 7:30 p.m., “contestants adorn their best Mask4Mask and evening wear looks AND perform their hearts out on stage for the crown!” Free.

Friday, September 18
Live, in-person music is coming back to Cafe Nine (250 State St, New Haven) for the first time since the lockdown. At 8:30 p.m., local four-top Dust Hat is performing its digestible rock outdoors—possibly from the roof, if the flyer is accurate—with neighboring bar/restaurant Firehouse 12 taking orders from its top-notch kitchen “before, during and after” the performance. Meanwhile, Milford-based alternative gift shop Weirdo Wonderland is popping up inside Cafe Nine from 4 to 10 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring chairs if they like and, of course, masks. Free to attend.
