This Week in New Haven (September 17 – 23)

B ig names pass through town and make a splash while a new local resource promises splashes for years to come.

Monday, September 17
A 4 p.m. tea and talk at the Beinecke Library (121 Wall St, New Haven; 203-432-2977) features photographer Roberta Price, likely discussing the photos of hers that appear in the Beinecke’s new exhibition, Eye on the West: Photography and the Contemporary West. By the way, the show’s official opening celebration happens this Friday, starting at 4:30 p.m. with a keynote address by Denver-based photography curator Eric Paddock and concluding after a 5:30 reception. Then, on Saturday between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., a series of three panels, each focused on a different topic, features most of the other Eye on the West photographers. Free.

Tuesday, September 18
Academy Award-winning movie star Reese Witherspoon is now an author, too: of Whiskey in a Teacup, a part-memoir, part-lifestyle book that’s officially released today. Today is also when, at 7:30 p.m., she’s coming to the Shubert Theater (247 College St, New Haven; 203-562-5666) to “share personal stories about what growing up in the South taught her about life, love and work,” while also discussing “how she entertains, decorates her home and makes holidays special for her family.” Regular tickets, which include a copy of the book, start at $59; a VIP ticket, which includes a meet-and-greet and photo op with Witherspoon, costs a whopping $404.

Wednesday, September 19
At 2:30 p.m., Alexander Heffner, host of PBS program The Open Mind, discusses “Civil Discourse in an Uncivil Age: The Quest for a Post-Partisan Citizenship” inside the Policy Lab at Yale’s Institution for Social and Policy Studies (77 Prospect St, New Haven). Topics include “the effects of divisiveness on discourse and governance and the impact of social media, disinformation and filter bubbles that polarize information intake.” Free; RSVP here.

The Roommate at Long Wharf Theatre

Friday, September 21
The delightfully acerbic and subversive standup comic Anthony Jeselnik, whose unique qualities make him one of the best roasters alive, delivers a set of new material at College Street Music Hall (238 College St, New Haven; 203-867-2000). The bill starts at 8 p.m. with opener Jacqueline Novak, a New York-based comic who’s appeared on Comedy Central and The Late Late Show with James Corden. $35.

Saturday, September 22
The Canal Dock Boathouse (475 Long Wharf Dr, New Haven), a long-awaited hub for public engagement with the water, enjoys its grand opening—“the first chance for the general public to explore this new signature facility and see some of the gradually expanding boating programs in action”—from 9 a.m. to about 9 p.m. Visitors can tour the facility, watch various boating activities, take a 1 p.m. or 5 p.m. paddling/rowing class for beginners and catch a 7 p.m. screening of the family-friendly underwater hit Finding Nemo (2003) outside on the deck. Free.

Sunday, September 23
It’s “time to gather kith and kin” for Friends and Family Day—a.k.a. the last hurrah of 2018—at the New Haven Museum’s Pardee-Morris House (325 Lighthouse Rd, New Haven), which dates back to roughly 1780—about a year after invading redcoats burned down the site’s original home. From noon to 4 p.m., visitors can experience tours of the house, historical reenactors, musket (and other) demonstrations, artifacts on display and colonial-era crafts for the young and the young at heart. Free.
