Marking the peak of East Rock, the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument also marks the spot where the city’s annual Fourth of July fireworks show launches, with the main and probably closest public viewing area located at Wilbur Cross High School.

But even if you manage to snag a good spot there, you won’t be close enough to see the detail of the monument, which underscores the more solemn and reflective aspects of the holiday. Plus, there’ll be all those explosions of light to distract you.

So here’s a closer look at the memorial that overlooks New Haven, before New Haven looks up to it tonight.
