G oing out into a blizzard can be a life-affirming experience.
It might even be once-in-a-lifetime. That was the case (so far) for 20 or so teens running and giggling across the southwest corner of the Green during Saturday’s storm. Hailing from the Dominican Republic, they’d come to New Haven for a Model UN conference at Yale and, for many, it was their first encounter with snow. Somehow they still knew to build snowmen, although, endearingly, the bases of theirs were shaped like mountains, not spheres.

Other cool sights on a wintry Saturday: birds lined up on a bench to watch those fledgling snowman-builders; a string of yellow lights hung up under scaffolding, like magic floating candles conjured to show the way forward; a bus stop with geometric windows turned white; streetside trees whose striking lines strike harder with snowy white accents.
Four days later, the city’s still got white stuff coming out of its ears. But unlike that white stuff, we needn’t fall to pieces during a blizzard. We can go out to meet it, face to flake, and delight in the things that meet us along the way.
