Mixed Feeling

A few Saturdays ago, marbled vaporous plumes of white and charcoal and every shade between curtained across a roiling New Haven sky. Sunlight punched through blue breaks, often in distinctive cascades—“crepuscular rays,” they’re called—while refreshing rain fell in scattered windy waves.

If you only looked at the weather forecast that day, you probably thought it was a day for staying inside. But a quick look outside, a momentary raise of the eyes from regular doings, would’ve leant good support to a conclusion I’ve personally drawn time and again: mixed weather is a real looker.
